Dark edition by Paul Secada Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Stories pertaining to drugs and troubled main characters draw me in. I was excited to start this story. The beginning started off well and I love that the author delved into the character's childhood first, to establish why he was the way he was. I really wanted to like this story. Halfway through, the grammar mistakes really got distracting. A few here and there are okay, but if an author puts their work out to be sold, I feel that it needs to be proofread first. This book read like a rough draft that the author wrote out and published without fine tuning it first. I also am not a fan of adultery in the least bit. I should have expected it, but it made the main character extremely unlikable. I was hoping that it would get better. If you are a person who doesn't like grammar/spelling/punctuation problems, you are not going to enjoy this book. It is riddled with them. Had it not been for that, I probably would have ranked it 3 stars....

Dark edition by Paul Secada Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Dark, by Paul Secada, is a short story told from the perspective of a successful author, Samuel Dean. The story is Dean’s autobiography, in which he gives us a glimpse into his mind as he reflects upon the struggles and challenges he is faced with throughout his life.
The book begins with a cleverly written prologue, in which Dean gives the reader a warning about what they are about to witness; it is a sad, morbid story that the reader might not be able get through. With this in mind, I prepared myself for such a story, and dared to read on. Although the prologue creates a great way to grip the reader right from the start, the problem is that it sets up an expectation for what is to follow. In this case, what follows is a very interesting story, but it didn’t quite reach the level of severity that Secada prepared me for.
That is not to say that the book is not a good one. In my opinion, Dark is a very unique, well-written novel with unexpected twists and turns that will certainly leave the reader with plenty to think about. The writing of each chapter is very poetic, and really feels like the thoughts that consume Dean as he reflects on his life experiences. Secada did a superb job of developing his protagonist; he is a fully fleshed out character who is interesting and likeable enough to make it impossible for the reader to put down the book, despite his obvious faults and weaknesses. Along those same lines, it would be extremely difficult to write from the perspective of a man at the lowest point in his life, struggling with relationships and succumbing to his cocaine addiction; Secada did this very well.
I would recommend this book to adult readers who are looking for a quick read, and are interested in diving into the dark mind of a struggling author.
This book is about an author who started writing short stories at the age of 6 or 7 on his deceased grandfather's vintage Underwood typewriter. At the age of 26 he finds himself spiraling into cocaine addiction. I won't give away the story's ending, but I will say that many of us don't realize what we have until it's taken away, sometimes by our own stupidity. I really enjoyed this book.
Excellent short story...I had to read it from start to finish in one shot...couldn't put it down. Super book, can't fo rthe next one.
The story certainly lived up to the book title. It was dark. Interesting read. Enjoyed the writer's style of writing. Very O'Henry ending. I am looking forward to reading more work by this author.
I had no stinking clue that was going to happen. Normally I dislike short stories. However, this was awesome. I will be checking some other titles of his for sure.
Since joining , I have been viewing other people's novels to see what's working and what isn't. Everyone has their own pitch. I have clicked on dozens of links, but the only one that really made me want to read more was Paul Secada's Dark.
Dark is a novella, or novelette, whatever you want to call it. It took me about ninety minutes to read. I have to say it's been a fairly long time since I've read a book of this length. Short stories will usually be over within half an hour and novels can go on for days. The experience of reading in this time length brought me back to books I used to read as a kid. They were short, to the point, and had no filler. They were works of art.
Much like Paul Secada's Dark.
I like books that are easy to read and found this extremely easy to read. Paul uses short sentences that gather momentum over time, until their dealing punches of truth. I absolutely loved the visuals he was able to conjure within me. This book was great for my imagination.
The story is about Samuel Dean, a best-selling writer who is writing an autobiography within the book, and his remembrance of childhood, adolescent rebellion, and glass half empty success. The theme or process, is about reaching within Samuel's character to discover his own faults, as much as those around him.
The book has some flaws. It reads like a first draft that hasn't been proof read by another reader. It isn't too riddled with mistakes, but enough that readers will notice.
Also, I found the narrator's casual swearing and objectification of women lowered the book's quality. There is definitely some higher thinking, especially with the book's terrific resolution, but overall Samuel comes across as having mediocre intelligence.
Dark's strongest selling point is its structure. Going back to Sam's childhood and building the story up from there was a great decision. Also, the chapters are extremely short, and are titled beautifully. They often come across as individual poems, that have a greater substance and depth than your usual chapter to chapter plot.
Overall, I liked this one. I feel like I've been to a nice little play this afternoon, and it's a experience I won't forget.
I'm always looking for free books on and fortunately, this has been one of the most interesting free short stories I've had the pleasure of selecting and reading.
